Who We Are

HCGV is an organization dedicated to education about gun violence and the promotion of regulation to reduce gun violence.

  • Firearm Safety in the Home: A gun in the home increases the risk of suicide, which is the leading cause of firearm deaths.
  • Risk vs. Safety: While some believe a gun can protect against crime, the risks of family suicide or violence far outweigh potential benefits.
  • Crime Prevention Facts: Firearms are rarely used in self-defense, making the idea of widespread defensive gun use largely a myth.
  • Mass Shootings: The availability of firearms capable of mass murder is a key factor in mass shootings.
  • Urban Violence: Easy access to handguns, especially for those who can’t pass background checks, contributes significantly to violence in cities.
  • School Shootings: Often, these tragedies involve guns taken from home. Indiana has no requirements for safe firearm storage in homes.
  • Domestic Violence: The presence of a gun in domestic situations greatly increases the risk of a fatal outcome.

  • Requiring background checks for all firearm sales and transfers
  • Requiring a permit, w Mandatory Training, for carrying a firearm in public
  • Safe storage laws for firearms and ammunition
  • Repealing the firearm preemption law to allow cities to regulate firearms
  • Raising the age for the legal purchase of semi-automatic rifles
  • Investing in extreme risk protection order and safe gun storage education
  • Providing a clear pathway for domestic abusers to relinquish firearms
  • Investing in community violence intervention
  • Requiring people subject to domestic violence protection orders to turn in their firearms
  • Ban assault weapons, bump stocks, and high-capacity magazines

Our Commitment

At Hoosiers Concerned About Gun Violence, we recognize that gun violence disproportionately affects marginalized communities, and we believe that creating safer communities requires amplifying diverse voices, addressing systemic inequities, and promoting inclusive solutions.
We commit to building diversity within our board membership and fostering an inclusive organizational culture. We strive to build authentic partnerships with organizations representing communities disproportionately impacted by gun violence, including those with lived experience. We advocate for policies that address the systemic factors that contribute to gun violence.
We believe that true progress in preventing gun violence requires working collaboratively toward equitable and inclusive solutions. Through this commitment, HCGV reaffirms our dedication to building a safer, more just society for all.
