These annual observances are crucial for raising awareness about gun violence and its impact on different communities. They remind us of the ongoing need for public awareness, policy change, and community support to reduce the devastating toll of gun violence.

  • National Gun Violence Survivors Week occurs annually in February. With a gun death rate 13 times greater than other high-income nations, by early February, more people are killed with guns in the United States than are killed in our peer countries in an entire year. 
  • February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month & Black History Month.
  • National Youth Violence Prevention Week is April 28 – May 2, 2025.
  • May is Mental Health Awareness Month.
  • June is National Gun Violence Awareness Month. The first Friday in June is recognized as National Gun Violence Awareness Day.
  • July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.
  • September is Suicide Prevention Month — a time to raise awareness and discuss this highly stigmatized topic.
  • October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Purple Thursday, celebrated on the third Thursday of October, is a day where people wear purple to show their support for survivors of domestic violence. 
  • Election Day is the Tuesday after the first Monday in November
  • Giving Tuesday is the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.
  • Each December since 2013, numerous partners in the gun violence prevention community have sponsored the National Vigil for All Victims of Gun Violence on or near the anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting tragedy. held in Washington, D.C., the vigil brings together survivors of gun violence, victims’ family members, concerned citizens, faith leaders, lawmakers, leaders of gun violence prevention organizations, and activists from across the nation.

In December 2023, HCGV hosted its Annual Meeting where members and friends came together to listen to State Senator Andrea Hunley, honor Gregg Doyel and Mary Boggs for their achievements in Gun Violence Prevention, and discuss initiatives from the past year.
