Who We Are

The Hoosiers Concerned About Gun Violence Board of Directors and Officers.

A brief History of our organization.

A list of some of our Accomplishments.

HCGV is an organization dedicated to education about gun violence and the promotion of regulation to reduce gun violence.

What we want people to know:

  • A firearm in the home is a major risk factor for suicide, the cause of most firearm fatalities
  • Getting a firearm for safety is self defeating. Any safety it could bring preventing crime is much less than the risks it bring for suicide and homicide for family members.
  • That firearms are widely used to prevent or defend against crime is not true. There use is very rare.
  • The number of firearms capable of mass murder in the community is the most significant risk factor for mass shootings to occur.
  • Easy access to handguns and concealed carry of handguns by individuals who could not pass a background check is a major contributor to urban violence.
  • School shootings are often done with guns from home. In Indiana, parents almost always cannot be held responsible as there are no requirements concerning firearm storage in homes.
  • The presence of a firearm contributes to fatal outcomes in domestic violence cases

Firearm regulation we would like to see:

To prevent suicide:

  • Universal background checks for the sale or transfer of firearms
  • License to purchase requirements for handgun purchases
  • Warnings concerning the risk of firearm purchases for the home
  • Requirements for safe storage of firearms and ammunition

To decrease homicide rates, particularly in cities:

  • Repeal of state pre-emption of firearm regulation by cities
  • License to purchase handguns
  • Requirements for training for concealed carry permits
  • Required reporting or stolen handguns or semiautomatic long guns
  • Requirements for safe storage of handguns in cars in the trunk or a secure locked container

To prevent school shootings

  • Liability for the gun  owner for injuries inflicted by a child with a firearm not stored safely.

To prevent mass shootings

Banning of the sale and possession of assault rifles, high capacity detachable pistols, and semiautomatic shotguns as per Connecticut law. https://giffords.org/lawcenter/state-laws/assault-weapons-in-connecticut/firearm

Regulations to decrease domestic firearm violence

  • Requiring the surrender of firearms in domestic violence protection orders
